90s Nostalgia: Stripes, Cher and Margot

Clueless and Tenenbaum outfit inspiration - 90's nostalgia fashion inspiration from Stig!

Plus an easy Halloween costume idea

Hi everyone and happy Monday! Who’s ready to talk about stripes and some 90’s nostalgia? I’m always up for flashback fashion, especially when it relates to childhood throwbacks. Since the 90’s have been “back,” I’ve said a few times that I love being old enough to wear what I had always wanted to wear as a child, but for obvious reasons, did not. I was a tevas and board shorts kid, not a runner up in Toddlers and Tiaras.

I bought this coat because it gave me huge Margot Tenenbaum vibes – Ok, I know, the Tenenbaums technically came out in 2001, but hey, we’re talking about a 90’s mood, not exact dates, right? Haha.

I threw it over a striped bodycon dress and OTK boots and the result was a look that blends Clueless and The Royal Tenenbaums. Like Cher and Margot had a style love child.

And I’m not complaining. I mean, just look at them:

We’ll be talking about the coat itself later this week, but for now I wanted to share this outfit because:

  1. Stripes. They’re “in” now. Now you know. As a kid, I remember stripes being one of the first trends I really cared about. I was nerdy and scared to dip my toe into anything that could draw attention. So my daring fashion move was wearing the same three (3) striped shirts on rotation. I believe two of the three were from The Limited, Too! Remember that store? Also, on a grammatical note, I believe the exclamation point and comma were part of the store’s name. Just FYI

2. THIS WOULD BE THE EASIEST HALLOWEEN COSTUME EVER

So let me elaborate on point 2 – this outfit was never meant to be a costume, but if you wanted to throw together something super easy, this would be it. Get yourself a faux fur jacket, a striped dress, black eyeliner, clip that mane back on one side and adopt an indifferent attitude and you’ve got yourself a Margo Tenenbaum look for the ages. You may want to swap the boots out for penny loafers, just FYI.

I look too well-adjusted to be a Tenenbaum, haha

A Note on Striped Advice

Common ”fashion advice” that we all hear is that horizontal stripes are ”unflattering.” As I get older, I have less patience for bull shit, so to that I ask, ”how ever do you mean?” The answer is usually, ”well, they make you look fat.”

*Eyes glaze over*

I know a lot of people in the body positive community who would raise an eyebrow and say, “yes, and your point is?”

I LOVE THAT! No matter what

Stripes will look different on everybody and every body.

And for me, I like my butt looking as big as possible. So bring on the stripes.

Cher would have had an iPhone X and the dress would totally be Alaia, but whatever.
You can get packs of rings like these at Forever 21, where I got most of these (except the round gold druzy ring).

These last photos crack me UP because I look like a straight-up snob! HA! Just to give an alternative visual, I definitely had to follow my dog around with poop bags on the sidewalk around my apartment building in this outfit. I don’t think Cher and Margot ever did that.

You like?

What do you remember wearing as a kid? Have some of those trends stuck with you?

love

Stig.
