Alternate title: Wait, rose isn’t a neutral?

So I get that neutrals are considered super-chic. If you ask me the simplest way to put together a grown-up-boss-lady outfit, it would be to wear head to toe camel in nice, well-fitted fabrics.

But you didn’t ask, and I also am not in the mood for camel.

What I am in the mood for, especially coming off a month in the tropics, is this MARIGOLD knit skirt. I say MARIGOLD because this color absolutely sings in the sunlight.

And perhaps it’s because I spent all last week looking at couture week press, but I really wasn’t inspired to pair this beautiful piece with camel. Or black. How boring. After all those beautiful color combos I cannot pretend I didn’t see last week, how could I go back?

Normally, a loud color would be paired with a neutral. A taupe, a grey, or a black. But I was like, so over that (I also just watched an old Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, so all that 90’s vocab is sneaking in – can you tell?).

So I went with rose. Or millennial pink, whatever the young kids are calling it nowadays. I made my own damn neutral.

I like that it was different, but still not competing with the orange of the skirt. I also chose a similar fabric – the ribbed knit is excellent for February in the Bay, which is essentially spring in our book. The bright colors in the heavier knits make for excellent transition pieces.

Using a red and orange heel built on the warm color palette – it’s not important that they match exactly . What layering similar hues does is add dimension and interest, as the colors all play off one another.

Oh – I also made green a neutral here, too. We’ve gone so far off the rails from normal neutral territory, I figured, why not? The key is that the green bag is simple, and dark enough to not pull from that marigold I love so much.

Location: Rooftop Garden

ALSO, if you’re from the Bay, did you realize that there is a 3 acre rooftop garden on top of a parking structure by Lake Merritt? I just discovered it and it is totally amazing. I called in Papa Mendes to come take photos there because it is just too good. Totally sheltered from downtown, in the middle of everything, but oh so zen. It was midday, and pairs of people in business casual were strolling around the pools and gardens on their lunch break. Anyway, thought I should share that tidbit in case you want a hideaway by the lake.

I hope you had a lovely weekend and that you have a fulfilling week!

love,

Stig
