How I fell in love with a graphic oversized sweater, I’ll never be quite sure. I usually shy away from anything oversized, being only 5″1′. But whether it was the color, the richness of the knit, the surprise slits in the sleeves, or my brain riding the wave of the collective unconscious, the point of the story is that I freaking love this sweater.

Speaking of the collective unconscious, the idea of wearing an oversized sweater with over-the-knee boots is nothing new. In fact, according to Stylecaster, it’s a trend that “came and went for most of us in 2017.”
Pardon? “Most of us”? Am I the only one who missed that? It’s 2019 and I am just discovering how ludicrous AND versatile this trend is. Ludicrous because, well … look at it.

And it has a name – lampshading. I find that absolutely H I L A R I O U S. Apparently Ariana Grande made it a full-on “thing.” Coincidence that we both love it and we’re the same height? I think not.

Here’s my case for why this seemingly-sloppy fad is actually the best idea ever:
- You got over-the-knee boots? Great. You don’t need pants. You’ll look cute and sassy and like you’re not really trying because you couldn’t be bothered with pants. You may want to wear shorts under, just in case you ride an escalator or a mechanical bull in your daily adventures. However, I wore pants for these photos because
- There was a stiff breeze. Which I could have dealt with if not for my next point:
- Papa Mendes was taking the photos and out of respect for my ELDERS (Dad, I know you’re reading this), I decided it was best to, you know, put pants on. Call me old-fashioned, I dare you.
- With the exception of the office and the gym, and maybe mass, you can wear this ANYWHERE (ok, I can think of a few other places you wouldn’t, but you get my point). Shopping, dinner with a friend, seeing a movie, on a date – you have options, my friend. I tested this out myself by wearing this look by day and meeting my friend (hey, Ashley!) for dinner in the evening. I felt very snazzy.
- Had a big meal? Unbutton your pants, if you’re wearing them. No one will know.
- Get home, take off your boots, and voila! You’re in high-gear lounge mode.

Convinced? I hope so. Or maybe you were more clued in to this phenomenon in 2017 and are ahead of the game (yes, my brain categorizes lampshading as a phenomenon, don’t judge). Thoughts?
love,
Stig.
