Hi there! I’m back from Detroit and taking the day to get settled (which nowadays means editing photos and responding to Instagram messages). I wanted to share the cozy outfits I put together when I visited my sister up in the Arctic this week, so here goes!
I have a hard time dressing for cold weather. I absolutely hate bulky clothes, and if I have to wear a puffer jacket it better be in the form of one of those Moncler puff ball gowns from Milan Fashion Week. If it were up to me, the weather would stay at a balmy 85 degrees so I could dress in ONE (1) layer at a time, with the exception of if I wanted to go skiing – then it would be ok if it were cold, but just for a weekend. They make cute skiing clothes, right?

That being said, it is hard to resist a cozy knit. This sweater was so gorgeous and toasty that I didn’t even mind the turtleneck (does anyone else get bothered by the fact that turtlenecks feel like like a ghost is trying to choke you all day? I hate that feeling). I wore it a few times over the trip because it was just so effortless. It also went great with a beanie I stole from my sister 🙂

When Julianne (my sister) and I are together, we typically lay low. Our activities usually involve coffee, baked goods, shopping, and true crime dramas. On that last point, she introduced me to a show called Lieutenant Kenda: Homicide Hunter and it is so delightfully cheezy that she got me hooked.
When we did leave the house, we went downtown to Ashe Supply Company for coffee. It was such a wonderfully quirky and cozy spot right in the middle of town with delicious baked goods.

And then there was this Free People duster cardigan, which I loved not only for the warmth but for the movement it created when I walked. It adds a bit of swagger, as well as the benefit of keeping your tuchus warm. Also, it’s waaayyyy discounted right now at Nordstrom Rack (linked here and below). At $65, I think it’s a great deal. The knit is substantial, plus you can wear it as a cardigan or as a dress.

This second look I wore to meet my sister’s colleagues in the Pathology department in one of the main medical centers in town where she’s a resident. It’s worth noting that once in the hospital, I did cover my midriff, haha. Anyways, it was wonderful to meet the other residents in the group – super fun and welcoming people!

I admit that it is a very “California” move to wear a crop-top knit in 20-degree weather and call it “cold weather dressing.” Like I said, cold weather style is NOT my forte. And it came back to hit me in the butt when I locked myself out of my sister’s car and house, my keys, phone, and purse in the car, which was running. And somehow 20 degrees feels way colder when you realize that you’re screwed and all you’re wearing is a crop-top, a glorified cardigan, and stiletto boots. Good move, Stig.

Luckily, my sister’s house is half a block from the most delightful Italian deli we had been to the night before. Their lovely owner let me use her cell phone – on the condition that I didn’t make fun of her for having a flip phone from 2005 – and a muscle-bound guy with a thick Italian accent named Stefano gave me a homemade donut to munch on until Julianne could come and bail me out. She too was rewarded with a free doughnut when she came and got me. We both agreed it was worth me getting locked out of the car because those doughnuts (apparently from Stefano’s great-grandmother’s recipe) were outrageously good.

What’s with the Lunch Box?
Funny you should ask! The purse I used was this little Marc Jacobs Box Bag, and I love it because it brightened up those heavy knits I wore all week. There is just something so therapeutically ridiculous about a full-grown woman carrying around a glorified lunchbox. I mean, it does come in more sensible colors, but life is short, so I went neon. I love the bag because it’s practical – it holds everything you need, plus has a top handle, a side loop, and a shoulder strap, so you can chose how to wear it. Highly recommend if you’re in the market for a new bag.

We had such a fun, relaxing trip and it was hard to come home, even though I missed Rodrigo and our warm weather. I have a bunch of video clips of the trip and hope to do some editing and post a vlog next week!
Have a GREAT weekend!
love
Stig
