how to wear the polka dot trend, big 80s belt

Hello from Los Angeles! I’m here for a few days to help my friend Cory with an interior design conference – I’ll post on that soon! We have a few minutes between events, so I’m taking a moment and reflecting on last week.

These photos are all taken with a cell phone, so please pardon the blur. Yikes.

Last week was Fashion Community Week in San Francisco, a twice-yearly series of events hosted by a nonprofit of the same name. They host a week of fashion shows, talks, and mixers, with proceeds donated to charity. This year the charity of choice was Princess Project, a charity that provides formalwear – like prom dresses – to under-resourced kids. Good stuff.

Today I’m sharing my getup from the opening mixer, a fun night of cocktails at a club called The Modernist in San Francisco. I had this giant Missoni belt I bought from the consignment website The Real Real, and I was dying to wear it. It reminds me of my elementary school teachers back in the 90s, and I LOVE it.

The polka dot dress also reminds me of this one dress my mom had when we were growing up, although that one was seafoam green. But I remembered being so dazzled by it. Funny how things like that stay with you! It’s such a fun pattern, though, which was important to me because it reminds me to not take myself too seriously. Little things like that can help you relax, especially in potentially awkward social situations like fashion industry mixers.

The deal with the polka dot trend

I was a tad concerned that I was going to look like Minnie Mouse, but pairing the dress with a neutral coat (I’m not wearing it in the photos, unfortunately) and minimalist, neutral heels helped modernize the look. The studded handbag didn’t hurt, either.

That’s the thing about polka dots – they need balance with more mature pieces. Otherwise you’ll look like a cartoon character.

My friend Cory went to the event with me, and we stopped to take some photos outside the club. We joke that we’re the Olsen twins, because we’re both short and blonde. I do not do a good Olsen twin glare, though. I just look ill. Whoops.

Our ”Olsen Twin” look. Oh my.

The event was wonderful – there are so many interesting people out there, and all it takes is showing up and being open to talking to strangers. I talked with a few designers, a photographer, a stylist, and even a person who does interface for Facebook. Cool, right?

Anyhoo, that’s all for today! I hope you are having a wonderful week. Let me know what you’re up to!

love

Stig
