Back in Action: Updates and Best Podcasts of Spring/Summer 2019

WHEW! What a few weeks it’s been! I wanted to drop a note and say THANK YOU for sticking things out as we’ve moved and I’ve been out of commission for a bit. It’s been a perfect storm of moving out of our little place in Albany where we’ve been for over 8 years – imagine all the accumulated crap! – and me having the worst cold I’ve had in recent memory.

When I haven’t been dropping things off at Goodwill, boxing things up, boxing things down, running around town, calling utilities, mopping up snot, hacking up a lung, oversleeping, undersleeping, windexing, and getting lost in Ikea, I’ve been doing Very Important Things.

Like reading this article about a very real company called Pooey Puitton.

Or brainstorming a column for the blog called “I double f-ing dare you,” where my sister makes me do editorials wearing unsavory fashion items such as this very real outfit I shared on my IG. I may have ordered that outfit and am definitely working on how the hell to style it. Will report back.

And prying myself in and out of faux leather leggings that, while look great, turn out to be the equivalent of wearing a plastic bag vacuum-sealed to your thighs. Definite pros and cons to that, let me tell you. Although the vacuum-packed thigh conundrum is vastly outweighed by the cuteness of this Jonathan Simkhai sweatshirt and Nike moonboots.

Yeah, I said it. Nike. MOONBOOTS.

Oh, and not to mention this equally adorable and ridiculous silicone purse by Furla:

I’ve also spent a LOT of time listening to podcasts as I do the grunt work associated with moving house – so if you need podcast recommendations for your commute or, God help you, if you too are moving, then I am YOUR LADY.

Best Podcasts of Spring/Summer 2019

  1. Crime Junkie – This popped up on my Apple Podcast recommendations because I have a sick and probably pathologic love of true crime. And I have to admit, at first I was like, “what’s the big deal, it’s just two millennials giving the low-down on crime stories.” But I found that that’s the same thing opening a can of Pringles and saying, “what’s the big deal, it’s just deep-fried potatoes coated in dopamine sprinkles.” In other words, it’s wonderful. It’s sensitive, respectful, well-researched, and gripping.
  2. Just as criminally explicit, Pod Save America. Ok, it’s actually a political podcast run by former Obama speechwriters. And let me tell you, it is the BIGGEST island of sanity in today’s political environment. Is it biased towards the left? Absolutely. And I’m all for it. It is funny, informative, witty, REAL, and everything I love about political science, all in a podcast.
  3. Pod Save America spinoffs: Lovett or Leave it, a live-recorded podcast with Jon Lovett from Pod Save America, which is like Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me for politics junkies, and Pod Save the World, which is basically Pod Save America with a foreign policy spin. Because let’s face it – life and fashion are POLITICAL, so let’s keep ourselves abreast of what’s happening, OK? Also, I wanted a reason to use abreast in a sentence. Thank you.
  4. To Live and Die in LA. Yes, another crime podcast, because I have an insatiable infatuation with understanding humans and what makes us do what we do. But really, this podcast is about the disappearance of 25 year-old Adea Shabani and is a deep-dive into what motivates us in love, career, and family. Deeply compelling and intensely sad.
