… and affordable (ish) ways to get your cute paws on their pieces ASAP.
Watch your back Amur, there’s a new sustainable luxury diva in town. OK, so she’s not really new – Mother of Pearl, today’s spotlight brand, was actually founded in 2002. But hey, it’s new to me and (maybe) new to you, and I wanted to share my discovery here today. And even though this sounds like an ad, it’s not. I just really dig the brand.

So here’s the deal – I was perusing Rent the Runway and found this to die for silk dress. It’s the type of silk that feels a bit sinful, like it would have been burned at the stake during the Inquisition. It’s thick, richly colored, and absolutely buttery.

I had to have it.
Luckily, through my unlimited Rent the Runway membership (sponsored by Mama J, thanks Mom!), I didn’t have shell out half a month’s rent to slip into this dress. But were I a fancy lady, I certainly would have.

So imagine my straight-up glee when I researched Mother of Pearl and found that they are centered around sustainable, ethical practices.
What Makes Them Sustainable?
They’re no official stamp of sustainability (that I know of), but there are practices that push businesses into the realm of sustainability. Mother of Pearl seems to have attacked the sustainability and ethics front from all sides, from sourcing to manufacturing, recyclability, water conservation, animal welfare, you name it. You can read all about their sustainability, transparency, and ethics practices here.

Get Your Paws on Their Stuff
This is not an affordable brand by any stretch of the word. That being said, there are still ways to support the brand and/or treating your own cute tookus to some quality fashion without maxing out your credit cards.

Rent It
As I mentioned, the Mothership for fashion bloggers, Rent the Runway, stocks Mother of Pearl (plus, renting is a great eco-friendly way to rotate items through your wardrobe.) I have an unlimited monthly subscription ($170), but you can also rent pieces a la carte, so to speak. Here’s a selection of what they have available at the moment:
Buy it Consigned
I’m a fan of The Real Real, so I picked some of their offerings – but you could just as easily search other consignment sites, like the Vestiaire Collective. Consignment is gaining in popularity nowadays, and with good reason – it’s an ecofriendly choice if you want quality pieces at good prices.
Buy it at a Discount
If you want it brand new and yours forever and ever, may I recommend The Outnet? They’re owned by Net-a-Porter and sell past seasons’ stock. That way you can live out your Elle Woods dreams and tap your little last season Prada shoes at whomever you please. Or your Mother of Pearl shoes, as it were.
Feel like going whole-hog and take a look at current-season items? Farfetch (international), Conceito Ê (Brasil), and of COURSE, the Mother of Pearl website have you covered.
Do you have a sustainable brand favorite? Let me know – always looking for suggestions. I may just write it up on the blog 🙂
love,
Stig.
