I almost titled this post “Accidentally Isabel Marant,” but decided against it – because although this look does strongly resemble some of Marant’s recent work, I hadn’t even seen her latest runway show when I put this look together. What this look is really about is the Magnificent Trend of the Oversized Jacket – with or without the Marant blessing.
Last week, we here in the Bay Area suffered a heat wave, with a sudden plummet of temperatures towards the end of the week. This, combined with my resistance to anything acknowledging that summer is over, led to this look: comfy shorts I bought in a pinch at Target last year, a sports bra from the heroes over at Aerie, and this GIANT JACKET from a brand I had never heard of, called Fifteen Twenty. Admittedly, part of the reason why it’s giant is because I got it four sizes bigger than normal, but that’s beside the point – I wanted to play with scale.

And, me being me, I slid into my heels, grabbed a handbag in the same blue tones (love me some monochrome action, and you?), and set about my day. I have come to tell you that I am in love with this whole oversized jacket business – I even came up with FIVE talking points, because I’m trying to organize my life better, like a grown-up.
Ready?

1. The rebellious part of me knows that huge jackets aren’t “pretty,” and I like that.
I live on the edge nowadays, guys. I encourage you to do the same. At least with jackets, I can’t advise you on any other area of your life at this moment.

2. Wear whatever underneath, just follow some guidelines.
With #1 being said, I do have an affinity towards what my friend’s mom calls “hoochy mama clothes,” or what my other friend’s mom calls “classy stripper” clothes. Aren’t moms the best? The oversized jacket situation allows for any range of distasteful clothing underneath, provided that you hit come criteria:

a.) the jacket is in the same color family as your hoochy clothes, because monochrome is chic right now;
b.) you roll up your sleeves like the badass you are; and
c.) you properly accessorize – I suggest anything that makes your look feel informal, like this grocery-bag-meets-fancy-bag bag that I used.

3. Warmth.
Because who likes being cold?

4. Innuendo.
Yeah, I said it. It can look like you just had a wild night with your supermodel lover. What happens when you run into your ex in this outfit? The glory is all yours, my friend.

5. Isabel Marant.
Yes, this is a post hoc reason to don the oversized jacket, but I mean, just look:

And yes, there were many other designers who showcased oversized jackets (Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Balmain, to name a few). But today, Marant is Muse. At least, in hindsight.

Did I convince you to give it a try?
love,
Stig.
PS. Can anyone advise me on the proper spelling of “hoochy?” The internet lacks consensus.
