The dust has settled from Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020, and the trend reports are in! Even though I’m hustling to get ready for LA Fashion Week, I wanted to pop in today and share my top 5 trend observations from Paris!
Why This Matters
Fashion weeks are a chance to see your wardrobe from a slightly different angle, or even sometimes, with completely new eyes. It’s an invitation to either wear what you already have in a different way (like simply wearing a hip belt at the waist, for example), or choose what you’d like to invest in for the future.
Trends roll out on these runways, and depending on the brand, you can buy them right away OR you can wait a few months until they hit the stores. Either way, these clothes are collector’s items and are very. Pricey.
SO, what I think works for most people is to take a look at the current trends on the runway. Let them settle in your mind for a bit, and imagine what would feel good or fun to try. Remember too that they styling at runway shows tends to be extreme, and that IRL is often less wild or abstract.
When Spring arrives, you’ll have a good idea of what you like and what you want to avoid, and by that time, more affordable retailers like Zara, Reformation, Topshop, etc will have versions of those trends in stock. These retailers often make the Fashion Week trends more practical, a bit more toned down, more wearable, too – so you can choose how extreme you want to go with trends when it comes time to buy new clothes.
All right, are we ready for some Serious-Looking-Models-Wearing-Clothes-That-Cost-A-Year-of-College-Tuition? Let’s go!

1. Monochrome Suiting

2. Minimalism

3. Maximalism
Something that I’ve noticed over the years is the tendency of trends to be dualistic; that is, two opposite styles will be big at the same time. The rise of the bootie along with the popularity of the over-the-knee boot is a good example, and so is minimalism/maximalism. Just food for thought.

4. Transparency

5. Giant Shoulders
We referenced this in last week’s Moschino post, but it bears repeating because it was SUCH a big presence on the Parisian runways this season (did you see my pun there?).

Does anything tickle your fancy?
Let me know if you’d like a “runway-to-street” type of post that would break down how to (realistically) use these trends!
love,
Stig.
