I am painfully aware of the ludicrous amount of time we all spend on social media (I said “we all” to make myself feel better, let’s be real). The brain is such a machine – what goes into it dictates what comes out, how you feel, your perspective on life and yourself.
Knowing me, and if you love fashion, you’ll probably fall into this category too, I know that I’ll be enchanted by photo after photo of beautiful clothing on beautiful people, living (seemingly) beautiful lives. And what an amazing thing, to be able to pick up your phone and see curated beauty and art whenever you like!
But, like desserts in the food pyramid, it just isn’t healthy to feed yourself with one type of image or message all the time. You have to mix it up with things that bring you comfort, knowledge, connection, and joy.
So in the interest of variety, I’ve been collecting a list of must-follow Instagram accounts to feed the brain and the soul. Some of them are fashion accounts, but all of them are beautiful in ways that uplift, educate, and share the human experience. There are so many good ones out there that I’ve had to break this post into parts!

Excellent Coats on Irritated Women
What it is:
The sweet spot where comedy, intersectional feminism, and politics meet in badass coats to lift each other up.
Why it’s worth following:
Sara Benincasa, a comedian and author, runs this account which is as informative as it is kind, inspiring, and downright hilarious.
Tracee Ellis Ross
What it is:
Actress, businesswoman, and activist Tracee Ellis Ross’s account that blends fashion, personal moments, little nuggets of wisdom, joy, fun, and political savvy.
Why it’s worth following:
Tracee has that balance of understanding that weird way life has of being both incredibly serious and joyfully light. She’s raw, fun, empathetic, and will make you feel like cyberspace is becoming more human.
Brooklyn Decker
What it is:
Actress, entrepreneur, and model Brooklyn Decker’s personal account. It’s safe to say that there are zero F’s to be seen, filtered or otherwise.
Why it’s worth following:
She provides hilariously honest insight into work – both as a tech entrepreneur and as an actress on the best show ever (Grace and Frankie, duh), life at home with kids, and how truly badass women support each other.
Lizzo
What it is:
Singer, rapper, and soul of the Millennial generation Lizzo’s account.
Why it’s worth following:
If you’re not following her already, remember that forgiving yourself is the first step in combating regret (which is what I felt when I realized I had been majorly missing out). Her feed is a funnel of fun, self-love, love for the community, and being real about life’s ups and downs. You’ll laugh, cry, dance, and your day will be better for it, I promise.
