Just a quick note today – I’m battling a chest cold and addled brain and need to rest tonight before a big weekend. HOWEVER, I am writing one more couture review, out Monday, so stay tuned!
This week was couture week, which means that we spent a lot of time looking at (often) beautiful clothes that can seem ridiculous – either overpriced or impractical.
But I PROMISE you that there is SO MUCH MORE to couture than that – once you get beyond the thinking of “is this pretty?” or, “would I wear that,” or (the dreaded) “is that even trending?” there is a WORLD of nuance, social commentary, beauty, darkness, and humanity. Fashion can be ‘’good’’, even when it’s ugly.
That’s how I’m learning to review these shows: it goes way, WAY beyond trends or what I think looks good. Like all fashion, and ESPECIALLY in this niche, couture is art. If it’s any good, it’ll have something to say (or make YOU say something, or feel something).
Through that lens, I do as many reviews as I can here on the blog, and of course I’d love you to read them. You can check out my latest review on Dior’s showing this week here.
I also HIGHLY recommend reading Vanessa Friedman over at The New York Times – once I read her, I remember thinking “holy shit, I’m not the only one who thinks there’s WAY MORE to fashion than it seems.” She revolutionized it for me. Better yet, she made me see that fashion can be revolutionary.
love,
Stig.
