This neon blazer dress is just the right amount of wrong for the current mood as we enter into Fall (!!!) 2020. It’s short, it’s tight, it has shoulder pads, and yes – it’s full-out dayglow.
There are days where I feel like this year has been like driving a lemon down the freeway. Crap is flying off the car, an axle is grinding against the asphault, there are sparks everywhere, we’re all getting high off the fumes of burning rubber, we’re out of wiper fluid and there are migrating geese flying directly overhead, and we’re whiteknuckling the steering wheel and screaming “E V E R Y T H I N G IS F I N E !!”
Yes, everything is fine. Mmmhmm.
Enter: Neon
Hence the irresistable appeal of the neon blazer dress. I name it in my inner monologue as “the Malibu Barbie Realtor Dress,” for obvious reasons. It is beautifully tailored with its ruching and buttons, built to flatter curves but with just enough structure to give it an edge. It’s almost sophisticated, even pulling a power move with its shoulder pads. It almost has its sh*t together.
Almost.
Because then you realize that 1.) it’s made out of denim – a very nice, stretchy denim, mind you; and 2.) it’s neon.
There’s no way around it – this dress just cannot contain itself. It has all the trappings of a Sophisticated Garment and then just stomps its foot on the gas, rips off the rearview mirror, and screams, “toodle-oo, common sense! We’re going fluorescent!”
It recognizes that we’re whiteknuckling the steering wheel, anxiety at an all-time high, chaos around us, and soothes us with just the right amounts of structure and “f-it-all” attitude.
The Right Amount of Wrong
I wore this hero piece for date night last night, and it made me embrace the fact that neon isn’t going anywhere in 2020 – not even as we enter into the last weeks of summer.
And why not? Life is difficult for most people right now. For God’s sake, let yourself have some fun. Just make sure it’s the kind of fun that wont max out your credit cards or leave you in rehab. If you want to uncork a bottle of wine, wear a neon dress/sweatpant/t shirt/booty shorts and snuggle on the sofa, do it. Eat chocolate chips out of the bag. Flash/moon your significant other. Wear the neon.
In the midst of everything, you deserve it.
