Muppets, zen, self-timers, luscious underwater scenes at Atlantis, juicy Italian prints – must be Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021. Here you’ll find my summary of each of the major designers who showed this week, with all the little tidbits you need to know about each show. These slides were originally published on my Instagram Stories, and are also archived in my Stories Highlights, which you can access here!
Overall, you’ll notice that most designers catered to one of two artistic instincts given the current environment: escapism or social commentary. This ping-pong between embracing, wrestling with, and critiquing the various crises of the hour and creating creative sanctuaries where one can simply rest aptly mirrors the state of my own mind. That balance between coming to terms with reality – and the activism that comes with it – with the real need for joy, wonder, and peace is one we’re all feeling.
Some shows were done in the Old Style – in-person runway arrangements, albeit socially-distanced (or at least with the pomp of social distance currently demanded – rightly so – by society at large). Others were done with video or photo editorials, much like we saw in this season’s New York Fashion Week (you can see that archive, and it’s thematic similarities to this one, here).
