Y’all, I’m writing this on Saturday night after just watching the Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2021 film – and whoa.
It’s a forty-five minute piece created by Creative Director John Galliano and filmmaker Nick Knight, two of the artsiest, most shamelessly avante-garde folk in the business. It’s a film as much about product as it is about process, about analog as it is about our digital world. It’s about creating tangible replicas of memories, and making them relevant to right now.
Is it weird? Yes. I’ve learned that if Galliano’s name is on it, it’s going to be weird. He’s a master of that ugly type of art that twists you around until you believe it’s beautiful. But it’s the type of “weird” that makes you realize – perhaps if you’re an egomaniac like myself – that your point of view is far from the only one, let alone the most interesting one or the only one that can appreciate beauty.
In any case, it’s worth the watch. The Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2021 film is a showcase of South American gothic beauty as seen through the eccentric eyes of Gibraltarian Galliano. It cuts in and out of “behind the scenes” moments, including patchy video calls between Galliano and his team, and astounding imagery of tango and romance in a dark, water-soaked studio.

What did you think of the film? Indulgent? Grotesque? Interesting?
love,
Stig
