Ok, so spoiler: there’s no actual burlesque in this post. But there is a sa-weeeeet dvf wrap dress. And snake print. And thigh high boots.
But if you came to the blog today and wanted desperately to know what the hell to wear to your friend’s burlesque debut, today is your lucky day.

Do you ever take a step back and think about how awesome your friends are? This was certainly a moment of reflection for me. One of my close buds from high school finally joined a burlesque group, because she’s one of those people born with that old-timey, raunchy sass demanded of the genre. Apparently some folks were shocked at her decision, but as for me, my reaction was, about damn time. And let me say, she was amazing in her debut!
Full disclosure: I took these photos after the fact, because the pictures from the night of mostly look like this:

Yes. Me walking the SOMA streets with the photographic resolution of Sasquatch.
You can imagine that there were exactly zero other photo opps that evening that your web browser wouldn’t filter out for inappropriate content. After all, burlesque is essentially the art of intentional wardrobe malfunction.

SOOOOO, I got to recreate this look and photograph it in better light (ie, my then-unfurnished apartment).

You can wear a wrap dress anywhere. Really.
On a (probably) more universal note, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that a wrap dress is one of THE BEST closet investments out there. There’s a reason why Diane von Furstenberg and her wrap designs are the stuff of legend. I wrote more about the magic of wrap dresses here if you’re interested.

Seriously. What else could you wear both to a burlesque show and to the office? If you wanted to be fashion-forward in a more conservative setting, you could throw on a lightweight turtleneck underneath. Going to an informal summer wedding? Get your toes in strappy heels and grab a clutch. Going to the Derby? Please, please find a way to pair this with a gigantic snakeskin-print hat. You’d be doing all of us a favor.

With that, I you’re having a GREAT week!
love
Stig.
