The highlight of my week recently has been the SF Opera‘s weekend streaming of past productions – my M.O. has been to dress up as if I were going to the opera house, then to kick off my heels, pop some popcorn, and get those tenors on BLAST. This week, I opted for a pair of tailored shorts and a crop top – because why not?

Last weekend they streamed the Bellini opera The Capulets and the Montagues, which was fascinating for a few reasons. For one, the costumes were designed by CHRISTIAN LACROIX. Yes. It’s a fashion bonanza. Another thing is – and I didn’t know this was a “thing” until I looked it up – the part of Romeo was written specifically for a woman, as the musical orchestration, duets, etc favored a mezzo-soprano. Apparently it’s quite common – male characters played by female singers are called “trouser roles.” I feel quite cultured now, don’t you?

Anyhow, for the look of the night: I’m not sure they’d actually let me in the Opera House in tailored shorts and a crop top, but since I was viewing at home, I took some artistic license. I loved the fresh, summery combo of the bright blue linen with the puffy, floral brocade of the top. The shorts are almost long enough to fall into “bermuda” category, but not so big as to overwhelm my shape.

I’ve been seeing tailored shorts a lot lately, both on the runways and on the street, and it’s a fun, versatile trend to invest in. Dress them up or down, with flats or heels – easy peasy.
Now – planning tomorrow’s opera outfit for Moby Dick. Will report back soon.
You can find previous opera looks here and here!
love,
