The layered turtleneck has somehow always felt super sophisticated to me, maybe because my mom has always incorporated it into her wardrobe for as long as I can remember. Doesn’t it have that balance of cozy-sleek-slightly-academic that is perfect for fall?

And no, the Cold Weather Grinch (moi) is not about to wax poetic about the wonders of fall. However, it is a great time to break out a whisper-thin turtleneck and start playing around with it. Under blazers, cable knit sweaters, cardigans, dresses – chances are you’re going to look like you have your life together (even if, like me, you’re on the “all-carb, breakfast-cereal-for-every-meal-except-when-you-go-to-In-n-Out” diet and your passenger-side mirror on your Prius is duct taped in place because a scooter hit it. We’re all works in progress).

I normally don’t go for turtlenecks because I have a very primal fear of having anything wrapped around my neck. Wearing chokers has been an exercise in deep breathing for me, as you could imagine. Turtlenecks have always felt like a slow death at the hands of a very weak ghost and there is something completely perverse about that. I normally hack the necks off of turtleneck sweaters with a pair of shears and pretend that the hem was supposed to be frayed.

But if anything, this blog has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, because some people like turtlenecks and I support that. I love the way they look, I’m just not a fan of the Caspar chokehold. What really made me go for it, though, was the Fall 2019 Jonathan Simkhai show where he paired super thin turtlenecks underneath slip dresses. I just thought it was genius.

So here we are, fall in LA, and I had this fun plaid sheath dress. What better time to try a sheer, layered turtleneck than this? I found this one at Topshop from Nordstrom – I think it was only $25 – and loved how the blue played off the reds and navies in the dress. I may even wear it with jeans, ghost-grip notwithstanding.

My friend Kim picked out this bag, which brings out the reds in the dress as well. Plus, it’s such a goofy but practical piece (MSGM, so that’s par for the course, right?).

Also, a huge thanks to Kim for taking these photos! She did an incredible job, right?

What’s view on turtlenecks? Chokey or okie-dokie? Hahaha, I couldn’t resist.
love,
Stig.
