How to Style an Oversized Sweatshirt

how to style an oversized sweatshirt

Some days are vampy red dress days.

Others – due to exhaustion, scheduling, being Ariana Grande, or cabbage, are oversized sweatshirt days. The nemesis of fa-shun, the oversized sweatshirt is often the catalyst for comments like, “who is that sad, little person?”

But y’all, it doesn’t have to be that way – yes, what I’m about to tell you does break a lot of “fashion rules,” especially the sacrosanct “petite girl rules,” but when done with confidence and intention, the rule-breaking kind of becomes the point. A little bit of fashion subversion for 2020 sounds about right, doesn’t it?

Here’s the gist of how to style an oversized sweatshirt:

  1. Your sweatshirt better be clean and unwrinkled or my mother will personally call you and tell you to get your act together. She won’t yell or anything, but she’ll remind you that your best self deserves crisp fabric.
    • Iron it if you have to – but honestly, since you’re reaching for an oversized sweatshirt, you’re prob not in the ironing mood. If that’s the case, spray it liberally with Downy Wrinkle Releaser and give it a tug. I’ve used it for years and it’s magic.
  2. Master the tuck.
    • Most of the time, you’re going to tuck that sucker in partway – open your waistband and lay the hem taught from your belly button, around your hip, and back to your spine. Close your waistband, and half of your sweatshirt hem should be tucked in. Adjust to your liking.
  3. Clothes that look the best on people are the clothes that they love. There’s a certain amount of pride in that, right? So wear a sweatshirt that you L O V E. For me, that’s not hard – I have a soft spot for sweatshirts!
  4. Keep it simple. Whatever you pair it with, keep it pared down. Don’t got for ruffles or anything flowy, or you’ll end up looking like you got lost between the campus bookstore and a 19th Century flea market. Capisce?
  5. From here, there are a million ways to take it! My go-tos are a miniskirt, baggy pants and heels, and bike shorts – the key is balance.
    • With a miniskirt or bike short look, you’re balancing skin exposure: covered on top, not on bottom.
    • With the baggy pants, I choose ones in the same color as the sweatshirt. It’s a statement, yes, but it works because you’re balancing color.

Another option is the lampshading look, which tends to work better in fall and winter! Also, if you’re in the loungewear-look-mode, I highly suggest you check out this post on the best loungewear brands!

In these quarantine days, I mostly go for the third look with the shorts – how about you?
