Silk midi skirt and bodysuit in orchid | date night outfit

I’ve been dying to get my hands on a satin midi skirt – but, me being me (read: persnickety), it had to be just so. You see, a midi length is tough on us shorties – it inevitably shortens the leg and there is little to do about it, except wear your stilettos. Or, more practically speaking I suppose, to simply not care that you look short.

Those of you who know me will hear my snarky laughter – when have I ever not wanted to look short? Me, who mandates that all photos of me are taken at a steep upward angle, who wears platforms to the 7-11? Who throws her neck out kissing her 5’11” husband?

The Right One: Fit and Proportion

The “right” skirt for me needed to have some kind of lengthening effect – and eventually, I found this one on sale (!!) at Nordstrom. The slit was what sold me on it: high enough to feel saucy, but I could still wear it to my grandma’s house (well, she was a vamp, so our family standards are different from the norm). The slit cancels out the shortening effects of the low hem, which is just what I wanted.

A note on fit: The waist on this skirt was too big for my liking, but it worked. I like things that really nip me in, you know? If it sort of lacklusterly sticks there with no real vigor, it doesn’t do a great job of defining your shape. SO, all of that to say that if you’re looking for a satin midi skirt, as with any article of clothing, FIT is QUEEN.

I very well might take this to the tailor and see what she can do about it.

Orchid Ice (Styling)

No, it’s not a cheesy 90’s movie – the color of my skirt is listed as “orchid ice,” since it has a light pinked-purple hue to it. I liked the idea of building on that color, so I wore my shimmery orchid Safiya Jihan bodysuit (San Francisco based, Black woman owned, for those who want to smash the patriarchy).

Pairing a bodysuit with a satin midi skirt is a great way to guarantee a smooth silhouette and elongate your body overall. Bodysuits tend to be no-fuss, since once they’re on, they stay put.

The Opera

I wore this for my weekly night “at the opera,” where I treat myself to getting dressed up and logging on to San Francisco Opera’s weekend streaming program. You can see more opera outfits here, here, here, here, and (actually AT the opera) here.
